RPC sensitivity to low energy neutrons and gamma rays: preliminary results

Abstract: A double gap Bakelite Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) with common readout has been exposed to the radiation emitted from a 252 Cf source to measure its neutron and γ sensitivity. RPC signals were triggered by fission events detected using BaF 2 scintillators. A GEANT 3.21 Monte Carlo code with MICAP interface estimated the γ and neutron contributions to the total number of collected RPC signals. A neutron sensitivity s n = 0.46 × 10 −3 at ≈ 2 MeV and a γ sensitivity s γ = 12.6 × 10 −3 at ≈ 1.5 MeV have been meas… Show more

“…Similarly for the double-gap RPC using parallel neutron source for GEANT4 standard electromagnetic packages the neutron sensitivity sn < 6.368 × 10 −3 has been noted for En ≈ 1 geV whereas the RPC neutron sensitivity, sn < 6.496 × 10 −3 for the same neutron source, and energies has been obtained using the GEANT4 low electromagnetic packages. The present GEANT4 neutron simulation results are reliable and are in agreement with the experimental results reported in [17,22,23]. A comparison between the simulated and available experimental neutron sensitivity results at low energies can be seen in table 2.…”

“…Table 1 gives the neutron sensitivity results for different neutron energies, which are compared with the experimental results. Our findings are in close agreement with the experimental [9,12,13] and conventional glass-RPC neutrons [6] sensitivity results.…”

“…ABSTRACT: The low rate capability behavior of conventional glass with resistivity ∼ 10 13 Ωcm, is not acceptable in many experiments being performed in high energy physics. The usage of low bulk resistivity glass electrode in the configuration of Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) makes it possible for such studies where high rate environment is required.…”
