RTWiFi‐Lab: A real‐time Wi‐Fi laboratory platform on USRP and LabVIEW for wireless communications education and research

Abstract: The paper presents the real-time education and research platform as an effective means for describing wireless and digital communications courses with Wi-Fi standards. To this end, a Real-Time Wi-Fi Laboratory platform, called RTWiFi-Lab is designed and implemented as part of these courses using NI USRP 2921 and LabVIEW. Laboratory experiments of these courses give benefits for utilizing a hardware platform since these experiments greatly facilitate the understanding of significant effects introduced by real-t… Show more

“…The notion of SDR is to use software as much as possible for implementing communication modules. A typical SDR platform consists of two components [23]: a general purpose programmable platform for signal processing in baseband level and peripheral equipment for frequency conversion and digitalization.…”

“…However, the design and implementation of a digital receiver requires a significant level of communication theory and SDR implementation proficiency [1,13,3,7]. Moreover, such implementation has to be delayed until the students have gained sufficient knowledge in communication theory, for example, orthogonal frequency‐division modulation (OFDM) [18]. The mitigation of channel‐related impairments, such as OFDM frequency‐time pilot schemes and channel equalization, are an inherent part of such an implementation.…”

“…Electromagnetism is a subject with the aforementioned characteristics. Instructors have been actively experimenting with approaches to make electromagnetism education more interesting and easy to understand . Carpenter of Imperial College, who uses finite difference models to approach field distribution using computer plots , was one of the earliest educators to use CAI in computer‐based electromagnetics education.…”

“…For example, Aydin and her team proposed a course that support student modeling and design of microwave components by means of computer tools, design fabrication, and design measurements . A more complex experimental platform, which is a real‐time Wi‐Fi laboratory platform on USRP and LabVIEW for wireless communications education and research , is proposed by another university in Turkey, and students have a more complete understanding of the architecture of wireless communication systems through such experimental platforms.…”
