Bitumen modification was made with the activated crumb rubber concentrate and its efficacy was examined in terms of its consistency and rheological properties. It was found that softening point of the activated crumb rubber-modified bitumen increased while its penetration and elastic recovery decreased compared with the nonactivated crumb rubber system. Based on contact angle results, the activated crumb rubber-bitumen system was found to be more wettable and exhibited better adhesion to the substrate than those of other systems. The shifting of glass transition temperature towards higher temperature and the occurrence of inter-mix phases in the activated crumb rubber-bitumen system supported its superior temperature resistance. The difference in viscosity obtained between the activated and nonactivated crumb rubber systems is attributed to the high swelling of activated crumb rubber and its soluble fractions in the bitumen as viewed in scanning electron images. High complex modulus and low phase angle of the activated crumb rubber system over the entire range of temperatures indicated its reduced temperature susceptibility and more elasticity. The activated crumb rubber-bitumen system meets the requirements of commercial standard specification.

A new way for recycling polyurethane (PU) foams is shown by scrap pulverization and subsequent compression molding of resulting particles. The compression molding stage is also called “direct molding” to highlight the absence of any linking agent or virgin material. Large disks, 190 mm in diameter, were molded by recycling foam scraps from motorcycle seats. Aluminum alloy molds and a hot parallel press plate press were used: the molding temperature was fixed to 180°C, the molding pressure to 4.2 MPa, and the molding time to 15 min, whereas the weight of the particles to mold was changed so as to obtain disks with different thickness. The final density of molded product was close to 1 g/cm3, resulting in a compacting factor of 14 in comparison with the initial PU foam. Indentation tests and tensile tests showed that final products exhibit good mechanical performances

Bandas de rodagem de sucatas de pneus apresentam baixos teores de cargas inorgânicas e grande quantidade de negro de fumo em sua formulação. Neste trabalho, esse material foi tratado com hidróxido de potássio e cloreto de zinco e, em seguida, realizou-se a pirólise a 500 e 700 °C. Foi investigado o desempenho dos produtos na remoção dos corantes azul de metileno e alaranjado de metila em condições ambientais de pH e concentração. Carbonos obtidos com KOH e pirólise a 700 °C apresentam uma melhor capacidade de adsorção. A simulação deste processo permitiu a caracterização dos gases que contribuem para o desenvolvimento da superfície. Os produtos obtidos apresentam estrutura mesoporosa e estreita distribuição no tamanho de partícula. A presença de contaminantes oriundos desses carbonos foi investigada em meio aquoso. A ausência de zinco e enxofre e o excelente desempenho para remoção de corantes fazem esses materiais úteis no tratamento de água.Treads of scrap tires present low contents of inorganic fillers and a large amount of carbon black. In this work, this material was treated with potassium hydroxide and zinc chloride followed by pyrolysis at 500 and 700 °C. The ability to remove methylene blue and methyl orange were investigated under environmental conditions of pH and concentration. Carbons obtained with KOH at 700 °C present superior adsorption capacity. A simulation of this process permitted the characterization of the gases which contributed to surface development. The obtained products present a mesoporous structure and narrow particle size distribution. The presence of contaminants originated from these carbons was investigated in the aqueous media. The absence of zinc and sulfur releasing and the excellent ability to remove organic dye make these materials useful in the treatment of waste water.
