“…The addition of crumb rubber can considerably alter the mechanical properties of bitumens by acting both as an inert filler and as a dissolved polymer modifier [29,30]. Therefore, the two neat bitumens were modified by adding recycled tyre rubber in order to validate the proposed method on modified bitumens.…”

“…All tests were conducted at a single frequency of 10Hz using a 2mm gap with the 8 mm plate-plate testing geometry. The effect of gap size on the rheological measurements was investigated due to the presence of rubber particles, and a 2mm gap size has been shown to provide reliable and repeatable measurements [29]. Different testing temperatures were selected for bitumen H and its rubberised bitumen and for bitumen S and its rubberised bitumen to ensure high initial complex modules |G*| (higher than 15 MPa) so that edge effects or plastic flow can be eliminated and the binders fail due to "true" fatigue damage rather than "instability flow" [12].…”

“…In some studies, natural rubber had been used in a vulcanized state, e.g. tyre crumb, but this was difficult to disperse in bitumen (Pristi, 2013;Ragab et al 2016;Subhy et al 2016;Azahar et al 2016;Rossi et al 2017). Rubber modified bitumen is being evaluated as a promising binder with improved pavement performances, e.g.…”

“…Thus, a larger gap size can be used when testing those binders [3]. As a rough practical rule, the gap setting should be set at least 3 times higher than the maximum dimension of any particle in the matrix [25].…”

“…Therefore, characterizing the mechanical properties of binders and improving them by means of modification has been a topic of intensive studies for many years [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Testing only binders is deemed to be much easier and cost effective than asphalt mixtures.…”
