Rubella Virus Genotype 1E in Travelers Returning to Japan from Indonesia, 2017

Abstract: Although rubella is epidemic in Indonesia, the phylogenetic profile of circulating rubella virus strains has not been clarified. In 2017, rubella virus was detected in 2 travelers who returned from Indonesia to Japan. These strains were classified into genotype 1E lineage 2, which may be an indigenous strain in Indonesia.

“…These data can be used to track virus control and elimination progress, help case classification, and trace transmission pathways [ 3 ]. Analyses of rubella strains in Indonesia have only been done to a minimal extent: only three sequences of the rubella virus genotype 1E lineage have been deposited to the GenBank, which came from travelers returning to the United States and Japan from Indonesia [ 11 ]. Moreover, to our best knowledge, no studies have been conducted regarding virological surveillance of the rubella virus in Indonesia after the vaccination campaign.…”

“…Without elevated herd immunity and as a result of the increasing number of foreign visitors ( Japan Tourism Agency, Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport, 2017 , Japan National Tourism Organization, 2017 ), Japan will experience an increased risk of infectious disease outbreaks ( Kanbayashi et al, 2018 , Komabayashi et al, 2018 ). Therefore, it is vital to develop risk assessment systems at greater geographic resolutions.…”

“…The Caliciviridae is represented by Norovirus , infamous for causing acute infectious gastroenteritis with symptoms including rapid onset, abundant vomiting or diarrhoeal disease ( Anttila et al, 2010 ; Furuta et al, 2003 ; Maunula et al, 2012 ). The human pathogen Rubella virus of the genus Rubivirus of family Togaviridae ( Kanbayashi et al, 2018 ; Mangala Prasad , 2017 ) which is responsible for foetal death or congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) in pregnant women has also been included in this study. Semliki Forest virus is a PRV of the genus Alphavirus from Togaviridae family reported to cause lethal encephalitis by infection of the central nervous system (CNS) ( Atkins et al, 1999 ).…”
