Rubiparvus bistigma, a new genus and species of Empoascini (Hemiptera, Cicadellidae, Typhlocybinae), with a checklist of the Alebroides group in Chinese fauna

Abstract: A new leafhopper genus of the tribe Empoascini, Rubiparvus gen. nov., is described based on Rubiparvus bistigma sp. nov. from Yunnan (southwest China). Habitus photos and illustrations of male genitalia of this new species are given. Differences between the new genus and closely related genera are discussed. A checklist of the Alebroides generic group in the Chinese fauna is provided.

“…It can be distinguished from other tribes of Typhlocybinae as follows: ocelli usually well developed; forewing without appendix; hind wing submarginal vein extended between apices of veins MP’ or RP + MP’ and MP” + CuA’; male anal tube usually with pair of processes at base; male paramere without preapical lobe; male subgenital plate usually with numerous macrosetae (Qin et al ). Genera of this tribe have been divided into two informal groups, the Alebroides group and the Empoasca complex (Young ; Xu et al ). Members of the Alebroides group have hind wing vein CuA branched, while members of the Empoasca complex have this vein unbranched.…”

“…The Alebroides group of Empoascini leafhoppers includes 25 genera and 156 species, widely distributed in the Palaearctic Region and Old World tropics (Xu et al 2016). Of these taxa, 16 genera and 60 species are known from China (Xu et al 2016, Yu and Yang 2013, 2014a. A key to the group, characterized by the branched CuA vein in the hind wing ( Fig.…”

“…Knowledge of the world fauna of Empoascini remains incomplete and new genera and species continue to be discovered at a rapid pace. Members of this tribe have been assigned to three informal generic groups (Qin et al, 2011;Xu et al, 2015Xu et al, , 2016, one of which, the Alebroides group, is characterized by the vein CuA in the hind wing branched preapically. The Alebroides group comprises 158 species in 27 genera so far, widely distributed in the Old World (Xu et al, 2017).…”
