Runaway Young Stars near the Orion Nebula

Abstract: The star forming region of the Orion Nebula (ONC) is ideal to study the stellar dynamics of young stars in a clustered environment. Using Gaia DR2 we search for the pre-main sequence stars with unusually high proper motions that may be representative of a dynamical ejection from unstable young triple systems or other close three-body encounters. We identify twenty-six candidate stars that are likely to have had such an encounter in the last 1 Myr. Nine of these stars could be traced back to the densest central… Show more

“…Refined measurements confirmed the original findings ) and unveiled additional runaway candidates with similar ejection times Luhman et al 2017). Other young runaway stars in the vicinity of the Orion Nebula Cluster with longer ejection times have been reported by McBride & Kounkel (2019) and Dzib et al (2017).…”

“…The current status of potential runaway sources from the ONC is discussed in McBride & Kounkel (2019). They appear to cover the entire range of spectral types from O9.5 V down to late M stars.…”

“…There is one visual binary: sources #1 and #2 are at a spatial separation of 17 7, but they cannot be a physical pair due to the ∼10σ μ difference in proper motions. This pair is also discussed by McBride & Kounkel (2019). In fact, Table 5 contains only one new candidate runaway that is not listed by McBride & Kounkel (2019).…”
