Ruptured popliteal artery aneurysm. An insidious complication

Abstract: An acute rupture of a popliteal aneurysm is rare. Although the clinical presentation can be non-specific, this possibility must be especially taken into account when dealing with older male patients presenting with signs and symptoms of generalised atherosclerosis and non-specific pain in the popliteal region.

“…While reviewing the literature, nine cases were initially misdiagnosed. Five cases were diagnosed as a deep vein thrombosis,12, 13, 14 one case was thought to be a knee haemarthrosis, 12 one a popliteal artery aneurysm thrombosis, 12 one a peroneal nerve neuritis, 12 and one an abscess 15 . On reflection, it is possible that nonvascular clinicians are misdiagnosing ruptured popliteal artery aneurysms in those with leg pain and swelling.…”

“…Popliteal artery aneurysms rarely rupture. 8 Ruptured popliteal aneurysms can manifest as a massively swollen leg with loss of blood and should be suspected if no other cause is evident. 9 In reviewing the literature, the management and outcome of popliteal artery aneurysms was studied by Dijkstra et al 10 He reviewed 17 patients with 23 popliteal aneurysms over 12 years.…”
