Rural Entrepreneurship: One Key to Rural Revitalization

Abstract: Actually it's not as bad as the figures look. We've had growing pains; we've been growing so fast that we can't keep up with it-the cash flow-with money to pay the bills. My accountant says I'm doing alright because of assets and what I'm taking out of the business as my salary.

“…A lthough the references to topics related to rural entrepreneurship predate the 1980s (Gladwin et al 1989), using concepts other than rural entrepreneurship, the subject came to feature more prominently in the literature only in the 1980s due to changes and crises in rural society (Wortman 1990). A greater awareness that entrepreneurship could contribute to rural development may explain this rise in interest (Kulawczuk 1998;Fuller-Love et al 2006;Vaillant and Lafuente 2007).…”

“…Expansion of entrepreneurial opportunities and adoption of cooperative business models are frequently evoked as an important means for revitalizing agricultural and rural economies (Gladwin et al 1989;Hamilton 2008;Sharp et al 2002). Bioenergy specifically is touted as an opportunity for entrepreneurial activity leading to improved rural conditions (Cowan 2007;Kleinschmidt 2007).…”
