Rust belt or revitalization: competing narratives in entrepreneurial ecosystems

Abstract: Purpose Entrepreneurial ecosystems, the inter-connected set of organizing forces that produce and sustain regional entrepreneurial activity, are receiving heightened attention. This research finds that narratives about ecosystem participants discursively construct entrepreneurial ecosystems. However, the studies do not emphasize ecosystem and region-level narratives, focus on ecosystems in which narratives are uncontested and, thus, do not examine how ecosystem narratives compete with other regional narratives… Show more

“…First, our case study shows a bundle of mechanisms displayed by the EF to promote entrepreneurship within an EE. The case study also shows a promotion of formal instruments to increase the narratives of EFs and new entrepreneurs in the ecosystem itself (Roundy, 2018; Isenberg, 2010) and to motivate social responsibility programs in EFs with deep roots within the region.…”

“…The illustrative figures of this process model suggest that the boundaries of entrepreneurial ecosystems remain stable, whereas the density of interactions between ecosystem actors increase or decrease. Recent work on the evolution of entrepreneurial ecosystems has focused on the margins beside the growth stage of EEs-that is the nascence (Roundy, 2019;Roundy & Bayer, 2019) and the post-growth phase of such ecosystems. However, spatial aspects are not considered in these studies.…”

“…All this contributes to the evolution of a positive entrepreneurial culture, which offers new impetus for the processes. In order to analyze these processes, some researchers have recommended network analysis as a potential methodology to explore the relationships between the actors [Roundy et al, 2017[Roundy et al, , 2018Roundy, 2019].…”
