S‐LINK Salzburg gains momentum

Abstract

The city of Salzburg is the economic centre of an ever-growing catchment area. The S-LINK project, which was launched at the beginning of 2020, aims to make Salzburg's transport system fit for the future and provide an attractive alternative to private transport. The overall S-LINK project will be an extension of the existing local railway line connecting Salzburg central train station with the south of the federal state's capital and further on with the city of Hallein. The S-LINK construction works are divided into four construction phases and will be executed step by step. The work for the first section from the local train station to Mirabellplatz was submitted to the authorities for EIA at the end of 2022. The actual construction works are expected to start in late 2024/early 2025, depending on the duration of the necessary regulatory approval procedures. The article provides an overview of the project status and the ground surveys carried out, and shows the benefits of the project in terms of the national economy, traffic congestion and climate protection.
