Saccular Laryngeal Cysts

Abstract: Supraglottic laryngeal cysts are benign lesions that usually are easily recognized and simply managed. Among these lesions saccular cysts are uncommon, usually large, anomalies of the larynx and can cause severe airway obstruction and even death. Three patients with a saccular cyst were successfully treated by endoscopic CO2-laser excision of their lesions. Before microlaryngoscopy and laser procedure, an urgent tracheostomy was required in 1 of our cases.

“…Differential diagnosis of a laryngeal cyst is often difficult and this may have a marked influence on the treatment strategy. Laryngeal cysts consist of three types, according to its site, content, and status of laryngeal mucosa; ductal cysts, saccular cysts, and thyroid-cartilage foramina cysts [14-16]. The most common type of laryngeal cyst is a ductal cyst.…”

“…Its size can increase as it expands gradually and spreads through the thyrohyoid membrane into the neck, applying pressure to neighboring anatomical structures. Left undiagnosed and neglected these effects may be detrimental, leading to life-threatening acute airway obstruction [3,4]. Therefore, appropriate and meticulous anesthetic management is of utmost importance.…”
