“…On the other hand, introduction of COOH-groups onto the structure of one type of MWCNT suppressed the levels of oxidative DNA damage in A549 cells, although MWCNTs with high COOH content were able to induce DNA damage in the alkaline comet assay. However, COOH-modified MWCNTs induced a higher acellular ROS production than pristine MWCNTs [ 73 ].…”

“…A pilot study was designed based on our previous studies on MWCNT toxicity [ 36 41 ]. The dimensions of the GaP NWs used in the pilot study (diameter 78 ± 10 nm, length 1.8 μm ± 3.2 μm) were similar to the dimensions of the MWCNTs NM-401 (67 ± 24 nm diameter, length 4 ± 2.4 μm) and Mitsui-7 (74 ± 28 nm diameter, length 5.7 ± 0.49 μm), which induce inflammation at 6 to 18 µg/mouse [ 36 , 37 , 42 , 43 ].…”

“…To evaluate the inflammatory response to GaP NW exposure, inflammation was assessed in terms of the cellular composition in BAL fluid 1, 3, 28 days and 3 months post-exposure, and compared to MWCNT-induced inflammation. A single dose of carbon black (162 µg) was included as a benchmark of particle-induced pulmonary inflammation to allow comparison with previous studies [ 39 , 41 , 47 , 56 – 65 ].…”

“…For instance, sonication can break multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), causing a reduction of their length [ 27 ], and therefore leading to different toxicity profiles than the MWCNT that humans would be exposed to. Sonication has been used to produce MWCNTs with different lengths from a same initial batch of MWCNTs [ 28 , 29 ], and Hadrup et al (2021) concluded that the length of the MWCNT is a major determinant of its toxicity [ 29 ]. Therefore, when assessing hazard properties of CNTs in vitro, sonication should be limited as much as possible, and in case sonication is used, NM physicochemical properties should be verified to ensure they still maintain exposure-relevant characteristics.…”
