Safe design of healthcare facilities

Abstract: The physical environment has a significant impact on health and safety; however, hospitals have not been designed with the explicit goal of enhancing patient safety through facility design. In April 2002, St Joseph’s Community Hospital of West Bend, a member of SynergyHealth, brought together leaders in healthcare and systems engineering to develop a set of safety-driven facility design recommendations and principles that would guide the design of a new hospital facility focused on patient safety. By introduci… Show more

“…New hospitals may now be built with safety in mind, using good design to reduce equipment problems, assist infection control and reduce errors of all kinds (Reiling 2006 ). Once we move into the home, this hard won gain in understanding is largely lost.…”

“…This is partly because of the role physical environments play on patient healing outcomes and partly because of the market oriented nature of the healthcare sector where organisations are now in a position to attract patients, resulting in a much greater emphasis on the provision of patient-centred care (Stern et al, 2003) and architectural design of the facilities (Reiling, 2006). Patients' perception and feedback about the physical environment include what they think are important to them, what matters to them and what supports their healthcare experience.…”

“…A first review in the 1980's of 6 studies on in-patient fall risk profiles and interventions to prevent in-patient falls in hospital settings gave some indications of potentially successful approaches. The few intervention studies conducted in acute care settings such as in medical, orthopedic and geriatric-psychiatric units showed a reduction in the incidence of falls [19]. No previous research has ever been conducted on falls prevention at the Health Insurance Organization Hospitals.…”
