Safe operation of mini UAVs: a review of regulation and best practices

Abstract: This paper is focused on the safety of mini UAV (mUAV) systems. It presents the great efforts that are being done in air legislation, including the present and future normative. Nevertheless, considering that the work is not finished yet, a low-level risk analysis concept is introduced. Based on the international regulations, a specific three-step structure for mUAV hazard analysis is presented: identification, assessment, and reduction in a recursive loop that provides a solid architecture for facing the wide… Show more

“…For this reason, safety should be considered as a core requirement in every system or application design, and even more for systems that can provoke great damages [10]. Thus, without a clear understanding of potential risks of usage of these drones, the public use of civilian drones will not be possible at an acceptable safety level.…”

“…Different strategies have been proposed with respect to the safety assessment of UAVs, i.e. assessing the risk of an undesired event in a system, using both quantitative [19], [20] and qualitative [10], [21]- [24] approaches. For instance, the FAA developed a pre-flight assessment process in which the Safety Management System (SMS) 5 was adopted to identify the risks and the risk mitigation strategies to ensure that no safety hazards will occur during the UAV mission.…”

“…Many studies have included the benefits of using drones in construction; however, research identifying the concealed risks associated with their utilization is scarce (14,15). Currently, UAVs are extensively used in construction and their popularity is expected to increase exponentially.…”
