“…Diverticula, secondary to the severe gut dysmotility, may lead to complications of gut perforation and require emergency abdominal surgery [75] . Malnutrition is a critical issue for the majority of patients and, although enteral or parenteral nutritional support is often administered, this has not been shown to alter the disease trajectory [76][77][78] . Nasogastric nutrition is poorly tolerated by some patients due to the gastrointestinal dysmotility and long-term total parenteral nutrition use has been reported to be associated with hepatic steatosis and elevated transaminases [16,47,79] .…”

“…Nasogastric nutrition is poorly tolerated by some patients due to the gastrointestinal dysmotility and long-term total parenteral nutrition use has been reported to be associated with hepatic steatosis and elevated transaminases [16,47,79] . The administration of total parenteral nutrition should be carefully considered, as the lipid components are metabolised by the mitochondrion, the site of the primary pathology in MNGIE [77] . Portal hypertension, complicated by ascites and oesophageal varices, may also develop and these are treated as in other conditions [48] .…”
