Safety and efficacy of preoperative administration of meloxicam, compared with that of ketoprofen and butorphanol in dogs undergoing abdominal surgery

Abstract: Results suggest that preoperative administration of meloxicam is a safe and effective method of controlling postoperative pain for 20 hours in dogs undergoing abdominal surgery; the analgesic effects of meloxicam were comparable to those of ketoprofen and superior to those of butorphanol.

“…Many of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have proven to be effective in controlling post-operative pain in dogs when used either alone or in combination with opioids [3,5,8,10,11,13]. However, the administration of NSAIDs may induce gastrointestinal toxicity, compromise renal blood flow, and/or cause hemostatic abnormalities as the results of inhibition of cyclo-oxygenase (COX).…”

“…Meloxicam is another NSAID, and is a preferential inhibitor of the cyclooxygenase-2 enzyme (COX-2), high levels of which are expressed by abdominal and other tumours (see review by Mantyh et al 2002). The selectivity of meloxicam for COX-2 inhibition is thought to underlie its strong analgesic effects in alleviating signs of abdominal pain in rats (Roughan & Flecknell 2003), dogs (Mathews et al 2001) and cats (Slingsby & Waterman-Pearson 2000). Meloxicam was preferred to ketoprofen due to its more favourable gastrointestinal tolerance, an attribute also thought to be due to selective COX-2 inhibition (Engelhardt 1996).…”
