Safety and efficacy of probiotic supplementation in 8 types of inflammatory arthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 34 randomized controlled trials

Abstract: ObjectiveTo evaluate Safety and efficacy of probiotic supplementation in inflammatory arthritis.MethodsThe literature on the treatment of inflammatory arthritis with probiotics has been collected in databases such as CNKI, Pubmed, Cochrane library, Embase, etc. The search time is for them to build the database until May 2022. “…In contrast, probiotic treatments, prevent the increment in intestinal permeability and bacterial translocation that accompanies the disruption of intestinal barrier function. The beneficial effect of SpA is so far controversial 7,15 . A meta‐analysis research investigated 34 RCTs and 8 types of autoimmune disease including SpA, and summarized that probiotics improved symptoms in two RCTs 15 .…”

A meta‐analysis research investigated 34 RCTs and 8 types of autoimmune disease including SpA, and summarized that probiotics improved symptoms in two RCTs 15 . Another pilot study of 18 patients with active SpA evaluated the therapeutic effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus salivarius and ended up with significant improvements 16 .…”

“…Data supports that probiotics may restore the abnormal T cell subsets, particularly the abnormal levels of naïve CD4+T, γδT, Tfh, Treg, and Th17 cells seen in SLE [ 74 ]. In a recent meta-analysis, probiotics reduced inflammation in patients with RA, measured with C-reactive protein levels [ 75 ]. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been considered a very effective way to restoration of the normal gut microbiome in disease and has been tried in cases of resistant Clostridium difficile infections.…”

“…Nevertheless, they seem to offer little benefit regarding metabolic abnormalities [ 36 ]. Despite this, probiotic supplementation may restore the imbalances in some inflammatory biomarkers, or alleviate the clinical signs of chronic inflammation [ 35 , 36 , 38 , 41 , 42 , 43 ].…”
