Safety and Efficacy of Retropubic or Transobturator Midurethral Slings in a Randomized Cohort of Turkish Women

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of retropubic (RP) or transobturator (TO) midurethral slings (MUS) in a prospective randomized cohort of Turkish women. Patients and Methods: A total of 54 women with urodynamic stress urinary incontinence (SUI) were randomized to undergo either RP or TO MUS between August 2006 and February 2013 in a tertiary referral center by a single surgeon. “…These results are entirely consistent with data published in the international literature [3-5, 7-10, 25]. The current recommendations suggest TOT placement, and there is no hard evidence for individualized tape adjustment [5, 26]. Based on this, focusing on prevention, we designed our study to screen for RFs predisposing to VD after TOT surgeries.…”

“…Furthermore, this treatment was seen to be safe and well tolerated by the participating women. Even if retropubic and transobturator mid-urethral slings demonstrated their safety and efficacy in randomized controlled trial [31] , we believe that this combination therapy may be offered as a first-line treatment in all postmenopausal women with SUI. Further study and longer follow-up are indeed needed to assess the maintenance of efficacy in the long-term period.…”

“…It was reported by Goldstein et al [4] that following SUI surgeries, 66% of the problems remain stable or improve while 33% worsen regarding FSD. Mid-urethral sling surgeries (MUSSs), namely, transobturator-tape (TOT) and retropubic tape (RT) are currently the most studied methods in this manner [5].…”
