Safety and efficacy of three arthroscopic procedures using Holmium: Yag laser in two high‐responder haemophiliacs

Abstract: We report here on the efficacy and safety of three arthroscopic procedures using a Holmium: Yag laser in two high-responder haemophiliacs. The two patients were treated with an activated prothrombin complex concentrate (FEIBA; Immuno, Vienna, Austria). Treatment was started just before surgery and continued for 4-8 days. On one occasion antifibrinolytics were concomitantly used without thromboembolic complication. Post-operative blood loss was slight, joint mobility was rapidly acceptable and full weight beari… Show more

“…It is an easy procedure with a number of satisfactory results. With 198 Au synoviorthesis there is an expected 75% success rate, while with 90 Y and rifampicin synoviortheses there is an expected 85% or more success rate [13,19]. It is important to emphasize that no more than three synoviortheses can be repeated with a 3‐month interval.…”

“…Menart et al . [19] have recently reported on the efficacy and safety of three arthroscopic procedures using the Holmium : Yag laser in two high‐responder haemophiliacs. Such a procedure would appear to be superior to conventional arthroscopic synovectomy, which utilizes mechanical devices in haemophiliacs, because the laser might improve the quality of local haemostasis and the rapidity of postoperative recovery.…”

“…APCC has rarely been used to cover major elective orthopaedic surgical procedures. Only six elective knee surgeries have been performed using FEIBA ® (one knee arthroplasty, one knee synovectomy, three arthroscopic procedures and one bilateral knee arthroplasty) [20,21]. Excellent results were reported in five of these procedures, but excessive bleeding occurred in one knee arthroplasty and a cutaneomuscular plasty was required.…”
