Safety and feasibility of robot-assisted radical prostatectomy for clinically localized prostate cancer in elderly Japanese patients

Abstract: BackgroundThis study was conducted to assess the safety and feasibility of robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) for elderly Japanese (aged ≥ 70 years) patients with clinically localized prostate cancer (PCa).MethodsFrom April 2012 to March 2016, a total of 302 consecutive patients with clinically localized PCa underwent RARP at our institute. In this series, 109 (36.1%) and 193 (63.9%) of the patients were divided into older (aged ≥ 70 years) and younger (aged <70 years) groups, respectively. The correl… Show more

“…The most widely used techniques for RP are open retropubic RP or robotic RP [ 5 , 6 , 7 ]. Robotic or robot-assisted RP has become the predominant surgical modality to manage localized PC in the United States [ 9 ] and is becoming increasingly common in Asia [ 5 , 6 , 10 ]. However, robotic RP is a minimally invasive procedure performed by an experienced surgical team (for example, in a hospital with a high volume of robotic RP surgeries) [ 9 , 11 ] and requires advanced surgical technology.…”

“…RARP, however, has recently become a more commonly used approach 3 . However, some adverse events related to the Trendelenburg position and pneumoperitoneum have been reported to occur during RARP 7,8,19 . With the increasing life expectancy and the widespread use of prostate‐specific antigen (PSA) testing, the number of elderly patients diagnosed with prostate cancer is increasing.…”

In addition, considering the ageing of the population, the management of prostate cancer in elderly patients is even more important.…”
