Safety assessment of the active substance potassium metabisulfite, for use in active food contact materials

Abstract: This scientific opinion of the EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF) deals with the safety assessment of the active substance potassium metabisulfite, food contact material (FCM) substances No 1056, intended to extend the shelf life of wine. The active substance is sulfur dioxide (SO 2 , E 220) which is generated in situ from potassium metabisulfite, E 224.
