Economic growth and development are connected with the increase in consumption. One of the side effects of progress is waste production. Sustainable development would also include proper management of waste, focusing on their recycling. However, the direct costs of recycling sometimes exceed the costs of waste storage. Therefore, waste storage in landfills is still widespread. Improper waste storage or deliberate actions can lead to waste fires. In the work, the statistics of landfill fires from the years 2012 to 2021 were analyzed. The work includes statistics of the parameters of fires reported in the reports of Polish State Fire Services. Additionally, the usage of the resources and materials for firefighting and their trends were discussed. It was shown that resources required for extinguishing waste fires were increasing in this period. The statistics are accompanied by spatiotemporal analyses of the location of fires based on Corine Land Cover which showed that approximately half of the fires are on arable land and non-continuous urban fabric while fires at dumpsites are relatively rare. The important concern is also that around 10% of very big waste fires are in forests. All these analyses lead to the assessment of some environmental impacts which are caused by waste fires.

The fire risks associated with the plastic recycling process has received limited focus to date. The purpose of this article is to investigate available literature on fire incidents, detail the plastic recycling process, identify fire hazards in the plastic recycling process and consider strategies found in literature that have been adopted from research on waste and general recycling facilities. Calculated fire loads may be as high as 20 GJ/m2. Codes and standards in the literature addressing some of these hazards are discussed along with the shortfalls of the guidelines and recommendations. The primary shortfall identified is the impracticality from both a business process and financial perspective. The article concludes by recommending further work in which the hazards identified can be studied and simulated to design against destructive fires in a way that is both practical and financially feasible.

The constant emission of polluting gases is causing an urgent need for timely detection of harmful gas mixtures in the atmosphere. A method and algorithm of the determining spectral composition of gas with a gas analyzer using an artificial neural network (ANN) were suggested in the article. A small closed gas dynamic system was designed and used as an experimental bench for collecting and quantifying gas concentrations for testing the proposed method. This device was based on AS7265x and BMP180 sensors connected in parallel to a 3.3 V compatible Arduino Uno board via QWIIC. Experimental tests were conducted with air from the laboratory room, carbon dioxide (CO2), and a mixture of pure oxygen (O2) with nitrogen (N2) in a 9:1 ratio. Three ANNs with one input, one hidden and one output layer were built. The ANN had 5, 10, and 20 hidden neurons, respectively. The dataset was divided into three parts: 70% for training, 15% for validation, and 15% for testing. The mean square error (MSE) error and regression were analyzed during training. Training, testing, and validation error analysis were performed to find the optimal iteration, and the MSE versus training iteration was plotted. The best indicators of training and construction were shown by the ANN with 5 (five) hidden layers, and 16 iterations are enough to train, test and verify this neural network. To test the obtained neural network, the program code was written in the MATLAB. The proposed scheme of the gas analyzer is operable and has a high accuracy of gas detection with a given error of 3%. The results of the study can be used in the development of an industrial gas analyzer for the detection of harmful gas mixtures.
