Safety of Capsule Endoscopy Using Human Body Communication in Patients with Cardiac Devices

Abstract: Capsule endoscopy using human body communication to transmit data was safely performed in patients with cardiac pacemakers or implantable cardiac defibrillators. Images from the capsule endoscopy were not affected by cardiac devices. A further large-scale study is required to confirm the safety of capsule endoscopy with various types of cardiac devices.

“…A modulated 3V current is tapped by standard ECG electrodes that are attached to the patient’s abdomen [26]. Although this principle might be more critical for PM/ICDs than radiotransmission, no interference was observed with MiRoCam and PM/ICD in a recent small series with six patients [27]. No disturbances in cardiac devices or arrhythmias were detected on telemetry monitoring during CE.…”

“…Only one study investigated EMI between the MiroCam endoscope that uses human body communication to transmit data and PMs ( n = 3) and ICDs ( n = 3)[70]. VCE was safely performed in patients with PMs and ICDs, and images from capsule endoscopy were not affected by cardiac devices.…”
