Safety of Machinery: Significant Differences in Two Widely Used International Standards for the Design of Safety-Related Control Systems

Abstract: Industrial machines are known to possess many hazards. There are many laws, regulations, standards and practices that aim at ensuring that machines are safe for different workers performing various tasks including operation and maintenance. Safeguards protect workers by stopping hazardous motion when actuated. Those safeguards are integrated into machinery using two widely used international standards for functional safety. However, these standards have some significant differences although they are both based… Show more

“…One of the first protective equipment was a two-hand-controlled device. Especially in hydraulic presses, one of the most suitable solutions for protecting employees is a two-hand control arrangement (Chinniah et al , 2019). The machine moves when two hands push the buttons at the same time.…”

“…Safety-related control systems and functional safety offer manufacturers flexibility and a way of improving competitiveness as well as productivity. Safety becomes an integral part of the functionality rather than a required constraint to meet regulations and standards [2]. Risk in the industry is increasing over time because of the continuous shift from smaller to bigger and even bigger operations.…”

“…The safety of machinery is a specific area in safety studies that considers a machine's ability to complete its intended duty throughout its life cycle when the likelihood of hazards has been sufficiently reduced [1]. As described by Yuvin Chinniah et al (2019) [2], "Machine safety" integrates design, technical, and procedural measures to ensure the safety of operators with industrial machines. The main objective is to prevent injuries from potential hazards present in machines, such as risky mechanical movements, moving parts, hazardous energies, and chemicals.…”
