Safety survey of Iran's mines and comparison to some other countries

Abstract: The increasing development of mining activities in Iran makes it necessary to have a closer look at the safety issues. Analysis of different incidents and damages in mines can be helpful for the adoption of suitable approaches to prevent the incidents. In this study, safety statistics of Iran's mines in 2011 and 2012 were assessed and important incidents and injuries happening to employees for 12 different groups of minerals were evaluated and eventually compared to the situation of some other countries. “…Mines are one of these sectors in which DEs are essential due to the vast operating space, variety of minerals, and many consequences )occupational and public health, environmental, safety, social, and economic) [27,28]. Iran is one of the countries where a large part of its economic and social development depends on mining [29], having the 7% of the mineral resources in the world [30]. Mining industries in Iran have experienced an increase in accidents in the last decade [31] and essential environmental and public health challenges [32].…”

“…Having a comprehensive risk management system leads to making reliable decisions in a limited time. It also helps in making the proper response to applied risks and in determining the negative aspects of hazards (Bagherpour et al 2015;Yarahmadi et al 2014). All risks of open-cast mining were determined by Steffen in 1997.…”

“…Safety factors for decorative stone quarries were examined for the first time through an analysis of different incidents and injuries which occurred. For this purpose, standard guides were implemented for safety, quality measurement and risk analysis (Bagherpour et al, 2015). A classification of quarries considering safety and environmental attributes help mining companies in all aspects of health, safety and environmental management.…”
