Salinity Tolerance of Black Gram Cultivars During Germination and Early Seedling Growth

Abstract: A laboratory experiment regarding germination and seedling growth test was conducted with three black gram genotypes tested under three salinity levels (0, 75 and 150 mM), for 10 days, in sand culture within small plastic pot, to investigate the germination and seedling growth characteristics. Different germination traits of all black gram genotypes, like germination percentage (GP), germination rate (GR), coefficient of velocity of germination (CVG) greatly reduced, as well as mean germination time (MGT) incr… Show more

“…Under control VBN 11 had recoded the maximum plant height of 13.25 cm and VBN 10 recorded the minimum height of 10.25cm. Hasan et al, 2019 also reported the same impact on height in blackgram due to salinity.…”

“…In pulses Germination, vegetative, flowering and maturity are the important and critical stages; increased salinity during these stages directly affects the yield. Hasan et al, 2019 reported, in (Hasan et al, 2019;Shanthi et al, 2020;Priyadharshini, et al, 2019) the studies at vegetative, flowering and maturity stages are very negligible. Flowering and maturity stages are the important critical stages which affect directly to the yield.…”

“…The maximum GR (30.93%) was documented in the variety of Debuday though the lowest (19.03%) was documented in the variety Karmici under control conditions. Moreover, at 100 mM NaCl salinity level, the maximum reduction of GR (27.32%) was recorded in [14,[29][30][31] in sorghum, and other crops such as wheat [32], maize [33], black gram [34], and mung bean [35]. Poor seedling emergence due to salt stress might be caused by the weakness of hypocotyls.…”

“…Abiotic stresses caused by climate change progressively affect the cropping systems, which poses serious threats for global food production. Salinity is an abiotic environmental stress that seriously limits seed germination and hampers the seedlings and plant growth of different crops [3][4][5][6][7]. Salt stress is increasing day by day due to human action and climate change, which has a dramatic response to the morpho-physiology of plants.…”

“…It is a vital constituent of diet owing to its superior nutritional value having 62.5% carbohydrates, 26% protein, 4.2% fibers, and 1.4% fat along with numerous minerals and vitamins [10]. It is the cheapest source of dietary protein for humans and livestock, extensively used in various culinary preparations, and recommended for diabetes [6]. The population of Bangladesh is increasing rapidly while cultivable land is decreasing day by day [11], and hence, it is indispensable to produce more food from our restricted land.…”
