Salivary duct carcinoma of the parotid gland: A case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare and aggressive parotid malignancy that most commonly affects males in the fifth and sixth decades of life. Histopathology specimens obtained from SDC patients demonstrate a resemblance to ductal carcinoma of the breast. Therefore, to distinguish SDC from breast ductal carcinoma, several immunohistochemical markers exist that may enable surgeons to make an accurate diagnosis. In this study, the case of a 54-year-old male with salivary duct carcinoma of the right parotid g… Show more

“…Salivary ductal carcinoma (SDC) of parotid gland is a rare and aggressive entity; accounting for 1–3 % of all malignant salivary gland tumors, 0.2 % of epithelial salivary gland neoplasms, 0.5 % of salivary gland carcinomas, and 1.1 % of parotid gland carcinomas [ 1 , 2 ]. SDC of parotid gland has been classified as high grade tumors along with high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma and carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma in the updated World Health Organisation (WHO) classification of salivary gland tumors [ 3 ].…”

“…Recent studies of novel treatment strategies for SDC investigated the systemic use of molecularly targeted therapies (14)(15)(16)(35)(36)(37). Trastuzumab, which targets HER2, effectively prevents the recurrence of metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer.…”

“…This type of cancer resembles intraductal and infiltrating mammary duct carcinomas with a variety of histoarchitectural and cytological patterns. Approximately 61-100% of the cases are reported to be human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive (13,14), and a correlation has been identified between HER2 expression and prognosis (13)(14)(15)(16). Additionally, 50-70% of SDCs express epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR; HER1) (17)(18)(19), and anti-EGFR-targeted therapies, such as cetuximab, are expected to be useful as novel SDC treatments.…”

“…SDC is usually a high-grade malignant tumor, but low-grade SDC and intraductal SDC have also been reported ( 8 ). High-grade SDC is histopathologically characterized by proliferation of dysplastic cells containing large round to oval nuclei with conspicuous nucleoli and rich eosinophilic cytoplasm, occasionally accompanied by comedo necrosis, which resembles high-grade breast carcinoma.…”
