Salivary gland cancer in Finland 1991–96: an evaluation of 237 cases

Abstract: The study population consisted of 125 males and 112 females. The mean age was 59 years (males 61 years, females 58 years). Follow-up was at least 5 years. The commonest tumor location was the parotid gland (n = 152; 64%), followed by the minor salivary glands (n =46; 19%), the submandibular gland (n =38; 16%) and the sublingual gland (n = 1; 0.4%). The most frequent histological types of SGC were adenoid cystic carcinoma (n =65; 27%), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (n =45; 19%) and acinic cell carcinoma (n =41; 17%)… Show more

“…This is in the lower range but comparable to the findings of others showing survival rates of 50Á81% [6,9,11,13,18,19]. In our study the median age was 65 years, which is higher than in most comparable studies, where the median age ranged between 50Á61 years [9,10,18Á20] except in a study by Kohl in which the median age was the same as in our study.…”

“…There seems to be agreement in literature that parotid gland tumours should be treated with surgery with or without radiotherapy [1,9,10,18,19]. In previous years, many centres used single modality treatment [1,2], but since the beginning of the 1990s there has been a trend towards the addition of postoperative radiotherapy with improved outcome as a result [20].…”

“…Reports from Finland have focused mostly on the relatively rare malignancies of the salivary glands [16,17], and they were based on the 1991 WHO classification of SGTs [3]. The age-adjusted incidence of that cancer for 2004-2008 was 0.8/100,000 person years, with no change from 1958 to the present [18].…”
