Salivary immunoglobulin concentrations in predentate and edentulous mouths

Abstract: — The concentrations of IgA, IgG and IgM in whole saliva of predentate babies, dentate adults, and edentulons old people, and the salivary IgG concentration of dentate old people, were determined using a solid phase radioimmunoassay. A highly significant difference in IgG concentratiorms was found between toothYess and dentate people. The average IgG concentrarion in the saliva of edentulous old people was 5.2 q/l, which was about 20° of that of dentate old people. The salivary IgG content of babies was only … Show more

“…The effect of dentition on the concentration of immuno- globulins in the oral cavity has been shown previously to have a mixed impact on immunoblogulin levels (1,8,9). Our data indicated a significant increase in IgG concentration in edentulous or partially dentate individuals.…”

“…Physical and host factors that could affect IgG concentration or the ability to detect antibodies or antigens in OF have not been extensively investigated. The extent of dentition in an individual appears to have little to no effect on IgG in OF (1,9), but IgG variations relative to sex or age or to external factors such as smoking or chewing tobacco vary considerably among studies (2,6,(8)(9)(10)22). We recently reported the results from HIV antibody testing of a large set of OF specimens (n ϭ 4,448) (7).…”

“…GBI and DS correlated positively, and gingival fluid is the major source (approximately 80%) of whole saliva IgG (35). Because the amount of gingival fluid increases in inflammation, it is likely to be the source of elevated salivary IgG levels in our study.…”

“…Regardless of whether blood or saliva are used, selectivity in complicated biological media largely determines the accessibility of new LSPR immunoassays. Based on the potential for the onsite sampling requirement of more accessibility and safety in the future, we chose artificial saliva containing human serum albumin and multiple antibodies to mimic human saliva as a complicated sample [ 32 , 33 ]. The detection of increasing concentrations of mAb SP in mimicked human saliva (saliva buffer, S.B.)…”
