Salmonella paratyphi B meningitis in an infant

Abstract: We report a case of Salmonella paratyphi B meningitis in a 90 day-old male infant who was admitted with complaints of fever, vomiting and one episode of vacant stare. Clinically, the infant was found to be toxic and dull with a bulging anterior fontanelle. Subsequently, blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures demonstrated the presence of Salmonella Paratyphi B organism.

“…Transmission of the pathogen is via the fecal-oral route, with humans as the sole reservoir of infection. Transmission is via consumption of contaminated food/water or contact with chronic asymptomatic carriers [7]. Family contact could be a factor of transmission as well, but a recent report on the risk factors for the disease showed that paratyphoid infections occur mostly outside the household [8].…”

“…The treatment protocol for salmonella meningitis can be adjusted depending upon the sensitivity pattern of the organism and the clinical response to the antibiotic in use. Duration of treatment varied between two to eight weeks [2][3][4]10 . In our case, combination of chloramphenicol and ampicillin for 14 consecutive days resulted in a good response.…”

“…Salmonella meningitis has been reported following contact with reptiles, following ingestion of infected breast milk of mothers infected with salmonella, and having contact with stools of salmonella carrier mothers [4,5]. There are a lot of salmonella serovars reported like salmonella enterica, paratyphi, infantis, houtenae, Agona and typhimurium [6,7].…”
