“…Low molar mass electrolytes disrupt inter-and intramolecular electrostatic interactions in polyelectrolytes and are therefore commonly used in the GPC analysis of polyions. 33 The anticipated high molar mass polycation 7 was eluted faster from the column set than the low molar mass 7, and despite some tailing of high molar mass 7, the polymer peaks are well-separated and monomodal, demonstrating that the organometallic chains did not undergo any molar mass decline. The sharp signal, present in both traces at an elution volume of 43.5 mL, appeared when LiCl was added to the eluent can thus be ascribed to salt exclusion effects.…”

“…Upon addition of lithium chloride, however, the multimodal molar mass distribution disappeared (Figure ). “…The mechanism of elution was considered to be other than by size exclusion, and the addition of LiBr did not improve the mechanism; the excluded material shifted to longer elution times in the presence of LiBr, and the profiles were considered to have been improved. However, the action of LiBr addition to dimethylformamide for the size-exclusion chromatography of sulfonates has been described as ruining or spoiling the solvent properties of the eluent for the solutes. The ionic strength of the mobile phase has been shown to lead to increased elution times for alkali-solubilized brown coals in aqueous SEC …”

“…The solution provided by Lafleur and Nakagawa to this problem was to introduce the use of the more polar and powerful solvent NMP as eluent. However, in attempting to calibrate their polydivinylbenzene column with model compounds, these researchers found that elution times of the more polar molecules were significantly shorter than times expected from their molecular masses, i.e., polar compounds showed greater apparent molecular masses than their true values.…”
