Salterella and Volborthella from the Early Cambrian of Spitsbergen: the evolution of agglutinating organisms during the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian transition

Abstract: The co-occurrence of the small agglutinated, conical fossils Volborthella and Salterella is documented from the Lower Cambrian Tokammane Formation of Ny Friesland, Spitsbergen. Microstructural investigations of well-preserved Volborthella tenuis Schmidt (1888), collected from the fine-grained Topiggane Shale, indicate the presence of an organic cementing matrix that may have extended around the edges of the test to form an outer organic sheath. This is clearly distinct from the carbonate cements observed in sp… Show more

“…Volborthella is placed in the extinct Phylum Agmata Yochelson, 1977, together with a second genus, Salterella Billings, 1861, but has also been considered as organisms parallel to foraminiferans (Jones 2007). Microstructural investigations prepared by Jones (2007) indicated the presence of an organic cementing matrix that may have extended externally to form an outer organic sheath, which was also suggested by Yochelson et al (1977, p. 144). Among the commonly occurring Volborthella material from the Skyberg Member, one specimen (Fig.…”

“…2.1, locality 3) compares closely with North-East Greenland (Harland, 1997; Stouge et al, 2011). From this latter area, Salterella Billings, 1861 was described by Lauritzen and Yochelson (1982), Knoll and Swett (1987), Dunkley Jones (2007), and Stouge et al (2011). It is widely distributed in Greenland (Peel and Yochelson, 1982; Peel, 2017b), but has not been recognized in the outer shelf setting at Navarana Fjord.…”
