Sample Size for Measuring Grammaticality in Preschool Children From Picture-Elicited Language Samples

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a shorter language sample elicited with fewer pictures (i.e., 7) would yield a percent grammatical utterances (PGU) score similar to that computed from a longer language sample elicited with 15 pictures for 3-year-old children. Method: Language samples were elicited by asking forty 3-year-old children with varying language skills to talk about pictures in response to prompts. PGU scores were computed for each of two 7-picture sets and for the full s… Show more

“…For this reason, it is important to explore feasible elicitation methods that will provide clinicians with adequate language samples to assess the morphosyntactic development of young bilingual children. Shorter language samples have been found to be effective (Eisenberg & Guo, 2015; Heilman et al, 2010). Indeed, Eisenberg and Guo (2015) were able to effectively shorten their original 15-picture task to just 7 pictures for assessing grammaticality in 3-year-old monolingual children.…”

“…In this current study, we sought to extend the use of this picture description task to bilingual children. We explored the feasibility of using an adapted picture description task and grammaticality analysis using seven pictures (Eisenberg & Guo, 2013, 2015) by examining the error patterns produced by young English–Spanish bilingual children living in a border community.…”

“…Any discrepancies in error coding that could not be resolved were considered to be acceptable and were not coded as errors. The reliability of transcription and utterance segmentation/ inclusion for conversational language samples was also checked using the consensus procedure (see Eisenberg & Guo, 2015).…”

“…Eisenberg and Guo compared PGU for longer and shorter samples for 3-year-old children based on picture description samples. 31 Sample size was based on the number of pictures used to elicit the sample. PGU was not affected by sample size.…”
