Sample Sizes Needed to Describe Length-Frequency of Small-Bodied Fishes: An Example Using Larval Pacific Lamprey

Abstract: The ability to describe the length distribution of a fish population requires sampling an adequate number of individuals, but collecting more fish than needed is inefficient. While fisheries managers have assessed sample size requirements for many sport fishes, these requirements are not routinely described for small-bodied fishes (i.e., maximum length ≤200 mm), particularly larval lampreys. To improve the efficiency of data collection for these fishes, we used resampling analyses to asses sample size requirem… Show more

“…Two years into the programme, a review of the first phase of the self-sampling scheme was undertaken by MSS. This self-evaluation applied published recommendations and guidelines to assess the self-sampling scheme in terms of sample sizes (Gerritsen andMcGrath, 2007, Miranda, 2007;Schultz et al, 2016), sampling design (ICES, 2013;fishPi, 2016) and quality assurance (ICES, 2013;ICES, 2014;ICES, 2018a;ICES, 2018b). The report made specific recommendations aimed at minimising bias and ensuring data quality (see Annex 5 in Angus et al, 2021).…”

“…Field data from larval Pacific Lampreys were assessed via statistical resampling, which revealed that sample sizes of 40-130 individuals were necessary to accurately describe TL frequency for this species in the Willamette River basin, Oregon (Schultz et al 2016). However, the extent to which these results are transferable to other basins or other lamprey species is unclear, particularly because the ages of these larvae were not validated.…”
