Sampling techniques and preparation of partial life tables for the olive fly, Dacus oleae (Diptera: Trypetidae) in Corfu

Abstract: 1. A sampling plan was developed fix the immature stages of D.oleae (Gmel.) by analysing data from samples of infested fruits taken during the years 1973, 1974 and 1975. 2. The number of samples required to attain a certain precision is largely a function of density, so that the level of sampling can be determined approximately for a given density of immature stages.3. Partial life tables were constructed for the main developmental periods of the successive generations of D.oleae. For most of the year the n… Show more

“…A different approach is therefore taken in the present study where partial age-specific life-tables are obtained from sleeve cage experiments. The results generally support earlier observations which indicate a continuous improvement of the conditions for the immature D. oleae in the course of the season (DELRIO and PROTA 1975/76;and others cited herein;KAPATOS et al 1977, BICLER 1980. Apart from the age which the infestation reaches, insect caused fruit drop is also related to the amount of physiological fruit drop.…”

“…The influence of the infestation on fruit drop therefore depends on the time of attack, and on egg and larval mortality. Generally, mortality is high in summer and low in early winter ( KAPATOS et al 1977).…”

“…Studies at a number of different localities in Greece, e.g. Corfu (McFadden et aL, 1977), the island of Euboea (Stavrakis, 19751, Crete (Sigwalt, 1975) and Kassandra (Economopoulos et al, 1977) indicate that for a period of several weeks during the summer a very high proportion of female Dacus oleae (Gmelin) lack mature eggs in their ovaries.…”

“…The studies on trap-efficiency were carried out at 3 different sites on Corfu: Ropa, Synarades-Linia and Mon Repos between August 1976 and July 1979. The main study site was Ropa, an experimental olive grove in the central part of the island where McPhail traps had been used to monitor adult numbers since 1973Kapatos et al, 1977). Most of the other experiments were carried out in groves at Synarades-Linia in the northwest of the island, particularly during spring and summer when, in contrast to Ropa, large fruit fly populations were present.…”
