Sand Control Completions for Raven Field in Egypt

Abstract: This paper presents the results of design and field execution of sand control completions for Raven High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) gas field in Egypt. The reservoir contains stacked channel formation sands, that require sand control completions. The completions design is complicated due to combination of sand control and HPHT environment where industry has limited experience. The selected completions type was an Open Hole Gravel Pack (OHGP) with a pre-drilled liner. A series of lab testing has been cond… Show more

“…The drilling program required thermally and rheologically stable drilling fluids. Thus, there are three drilling fluid types which are used in the oil and gas wells reservoir drilling: (1) cesium/potassium formate clear brine system [140,141], (2) invert emulsion HPHT OBDF [142], and (3) invert emulsion HPHT OBDF with micronized barite slurries (MBS) [143].…”

“…These methods consist of screens, slotted liners, gravel packs, and screenless completion methods. Slotted liners are cylindrical screens installed on the wellhead blocking the passage of sand particles, similar to a filter, while not occluding the oil flow. The second categorysurface methodsincludes some screens such as a strainer to separate the sand in the oil. Desanders are then used to apply a kinetic energy difference, such as centrifuge, and finally, membranes are used to remove very fine sand particles. …”
