Sand properties investigation at Meridiani Planum, Mars

Abstract:
Granulometry, shape, and chemical composition analyses of the sediments studied by the Opportunity rover along its entire 45-km-long traverse have been used to classify sediments and provide information about their origin and depositional processes.

We have conducted granulometry and shape analyses of 179 sediment targets visible in MI images [1]. To facilitate the analyses, we have used the PADM algorithm - a semi-automatic tool for particle detection, measur… Show more

“…For PSD analysis, we used the PADM algorithm (Kozakiewicz, 2018) implemented in Wolfram Mathematica. The data supporting this work as well as high-resolution Figure 2 are archived at Kozakiewicz (2023). HiRISE data have been archived for free public access by the NASA Planetary Data System (McEwen et al, 2007).…”

“…Overlying and mosaicking of MI images were done using Adobe Photoshop. For detection and measurement of particles in images we used the PADM algorithm (Kozakiewicz, 2018) implemented in Wolfram Mathematica (Kozakiewicz, 2023) and for roundness calculations we used the algorithm by Zheng and Hryciw (2016) implemented in the MathWorks MATLAB by Zheng (2023; https://www.mathworks. com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/60651-particle-roundness-and-sphericity-computation).…”
