Sandwich Biobattery with Enzymatic Cathode and Zinc Anode Integrated with Sensor

Abstract: Carbon paper covered with side-naphthylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes was used as the conducting support for the construction of a biocathode in a hybrid biofuel cell (biobattery). Laccase Cerrena unicolor enzyme was employed as the catalyst for the 4e reduction of oxygen and a zinc disc covered with hopeite was used as the anode. Derivatized carbon nanotubes increase the working surface of the electrode and provide direct contact with the active sites of laccase. Biobattery characteristics under externall… Show more

“…Citric acid (C 6 H 8 O 7 ), disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na 2 HPO 4 ), ethanol (C 2 H 5 OH) and fructose (C 6 H 12 O 6 ) were purchased from POCh (Poland). Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), ethylene glycol methacrylate phosphate (EGMP), triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, ascorbic acid (C 6 H 8 O 7 , AA) and sodium persulfate (Na 2 S 2 O 8 , SPS) were purchased from Sigma‐Aldrich, while single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were purchased from Nanocyl (Belgium) and modified with naphthalene groups as described previously . The inorganic reagents from POCh (Poland) and the organic reagents from Sigma‐Aldrich were used without any further purification.…”

“…Modified naphtylated MWCNTs (MWCNT‐Naph) for cathode was synthesized as previously described and the procedure is reproduced in Supporting Information S1. Aminoethylated SWCNTs (SWCNT‐NH 2 ) were obtained by a method similar to described by Price and coworkers , and described in Supporting Information S2.…”

“…More and more often, biofuel cells are used as alternative energy sources, supplying devices that require a small power consumption for their work [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Biofuel cells are currently considered to be one of the most promising future energy sources and self-integrated bioelectrochemical devices [7][8][9].…”
