Sanguisorba officinalis L. derived from herbal medicine prevents intestinal inflammation by inducing autophagy in macrophages

Abstract: Disturbed activation of autophagy is implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease. Accordingly, several autophagy-related genes have been identified as Crohn’s disease susceptibility genes. We screened the autophagy activators from a library including 3,922 natural extracts using a high-throughput assay system. The extracts identified as autophagy activators were administered to mice with 2% dextran sodium sulfate (DSS). Among the autophagy inducers, Sanguisorba officinalis L. (SO) suppressed D… Show more

Yu et al (2011) reported that the ethanol extract of S. officinalis plants could block the production of representative inflammatory mediators nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PEG2) at the transcription level in an in vitro model of RAW264.7 cells stimulated by 1 μg/ml lipopolysaccharide (LPS).…”

“…The roots of S. officinalis have been traditionally used to treat diarrhea, chronic intestinal inflammation, duodenal ulcers, and bleeding hemorrhoids [ 12 ]. The ingredient compounds of S. officinalis , such as ziyuglycosides I, ziyuglycosides II, sanguiin H-6, ellagic acid, and quercetin, have been reported for various pharmacological action, including antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, and anticancer [ 13 , 15 , 16 ]. However, no previous paper reported the effect of S. officinalis on the regulation of muscle function and metabolism.…”
