SAPEA: A System for the Analysis of Instrumental Learning and Teaching Practices

Abstract: As we have just seen in previous chapters, ways of learning and teaching are determined by how teachers and students conceive of their learning and teaching functions: what do they think learning and teaching is? What are the goals they hope to achieve? What must the student do to learn and how can the teacher help them? what should evaluation consist of? etc.

“…Other noteworthy findings include the absence of music listening in our participants’ beliefs regarding creativity and variations in their perspectives compared with those of participants in other studies. We attribute these differences to the specific context (one-to-one music teaching) and the geographical location (Spain) of our participants, as previous studies in similar contexts have also highlighted traditional conceptions in delivering one-to-one music teaching (Mateos-Moreno & Erlanson, 2023; Pozo et al, 2022). Finally, future qualitative investigations may reveal additional categories and specificities within one-to-one music teaching, while quantitative examination may offer insights into the generalizability of our findings.…”

“…Table 2 shows the criteria used for analyzing the three dimensions studied. These criteria are supported by the System for the Analysis of Practices of Instrumental Learning (SAPEA), developed by our research group (Pozo et al, 2022). Each group's rehearsal was observed to assign it to a different analysis category.…”

“…This study analyzed the type of learning and interaction practices in different music groups. The methodology therefore had to be a multiple-case analysis (Pozo et al, 2022; see also Corbalán et al, 2023). At the same time, we wanted the comparisons between the groups to yield quantitative data, so we generated a system of analysis categories that would make such comparisons possible.…”
