Angiosarcoma associated with a vascular graft: Case report

Factors accounting for the low incidence of tumors in association with Dacron prosthesis in humans could be not only the large size of the porus (20-30 micra) in these grafts, but also a low genetic predisposition, a conclusion made by Brand [3] after demonstrating that humans, like guinea pigs, were highly resistent to foreign body-related neoplasms.…”

“…The time interval between the implant and the diagnosis of the neoplasm varied between 4 months and 12 years. The presence of neoplastic thrombus was responsible for the clinical presentation in two cases [5,6]. In the others, tumor was clinically manifest by pain and/or local compression.…”

“…A review of the world literature disclosed 32 reported cases [10], 31 related to the aorta and 1 to the femoral artery. In five of these cases (15,6%) the tumor was a sarcoma [4][5][6][7][8] and developed around a previously placed aortic vascular prosthesis, suggesting a possible causal relationship between the graft and the tumor. Vascular graft implants are common treatment procedures in vascular occlusive or aneurismatic disease.…”

We describe a case of angiosarcoma in association with an aortic Dacron graft, being aware that only five cases were reported previously [4][5][6][7][8]. The aim of this report is to draw attention to the occurrence of tumors arising in relation to vascular implants and also to the importance of looking for the presence of distant metastasis because its existence (sometimes unsuspected) may have important therapeutic implications.…”

Cardiac pleomorphic sarcoma after placement of Dacron graft

Given that foreign bodies have been found to induce sarcomas in experimental animals, 3,4 and a few case reports have described sarcomas arising in association with Dacron vascular prostheses, [5][6][7][8][9][10] it seems that an exuberant host response around the foreign body might represent an important intermediate step in the development of the sarcoma.…”
