Sarcopenia in Non-Dialysis Chronic Kidney Disease Patients: Prevalence and Associated Factors

Abstract: BackgroundSarcopenia is related to morbidity and mortality in non-dialysis Chronic Kidney Disease (ND-CKD) patients; however, the pathophysiology of sarcopenia remains unclear. The study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with sarcopenia in ND-CKD individuals.MethodsWe cross-sectionally evaluated 139 prevalent ND-CKD patients attending our outpatient clinic at Hospital das Clínicas of the Federal University of Pernambuco, between April and October 2019. Patients older than 18 years old and a… Show more

“…Thus, metabolic syndrome could lead to decreased muscular strength, which may not be the crucial factor in the relationship between SUA and LMS by different eGFR. Third, the decreased hemoglobin level could affect muscle mass and strength through several mechanisms associated with sarcopenia in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients [43] and kidney transplant recipients [45]. In the present study, we also adjusted the hemoglobin alone, which did not change the results in women and men.…”

“…Ischemic stroke and rheumatoid arthritis can directly affect balance and gait [ 66 , 67 ]. And kidney disease affects the homeostasis [ 68 ]. Thus, these people get worse muscle function.…”

“…Meanwhile, a multicenter randomized trial involving 149 participants with chronic kidney disease (CKD) found that PhA could predict the presence of sarcopenia (P = 0.001) (41). A Poisson multivariate model put forward by de Amorin et al (42), which included PhA, IL-6, and creatinine, was able to consistently predict sarcopenia in the patients with non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (ND-CKD). However, different results were obtained with kidney transplant patients.…”
