Sargassum horneri C. Agardh space capacity estimation reveals that thallus surface area varies with wet weight

Abstract: Sargassum horneri C. Agardh is an important commercial edible seaweed species in east Asia. Benthic beds and floating rafts in coastal areas make excellent habitats for marine organisms to feed, hide, and spawn. Many commercially important fish species such as Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus), yellowtail (Seriola quinqueradiata), and Japanese horse mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) live in seaweed beds. Chinese and Japanese fisherman rely on S. horneri beds as productive fish harvest areas. The Zhejiang gov… Show more

“…China's Bohai Sea ecosystem, one of the most intensively exploited areas in the world (Wigan 1998), is heavily degraded due to overfishing, pollution from inland areas and loss of biological habitat. Open-access and unregulated fisheries contribute to this deteriorating tendency and many small-scale fishermen still make a living through illegal fishing and use of destructive fishing gear in this region (Zhang et al 2012, 2018a. In 2011, Blue Ocean Ltd. created a 30.65 km 2 AR area in the eastern part of Laizhou Bay in the Bohai Sea (see Fig.…”

“…Floating at the sea surface, seagrass wracks can serve as habitat “hot spots” similar to other floating vegetation such as floating macroalgae (e.g. Sargassum horneri in the East China Sea)[ 12 14 ]. Thresher [ 15 ] is one of the only studies to report on the trophic impacts of floating seagrass wracks.…”

“…In addition, heavy metal pollution is mainly caused by anthropogenic activities, including burning garbage, industrial waste, overuse of chemical fertilizer and pesti-butes on rocks from lower intertidal to subtidal zones along the coastline of the northern Pacific (Komatsu et al 2014, Xu et al 2018 (Fig. 1).…”
