SARS-CoV-2 and Orientia tsutsugamushi co-infection in a young teen, Nepal: Significant burden in limited-resource countries in Asia?

Abstract: Scrub typhus is caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, transmitted through bites of infected chiggers (larval mites). During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, reports of co-infections with endemic pathogens are increasing around the world. Disease with similar clinical presentation may mask other disease diagnosis and increase the morbidity and mortality of the patients. We report co-infection between severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and O. tsutsugamushi in a patient in N… Show more

“…The age was not a significant risk factor for coinfection in one study by Kim et al [ 16 ]. Less frequently recognized pathogens were shown in some cohorts including Mycoplasma pneumoniae , Orientia tsutsugamushi and dengue virus [ 18 20 ]. These pathogens may reflect the local endemicity of diseases and can be underestimated by laboratories that do not routinely perform molecular and serological detection.…”

“…3,4 A syndemic of COVID-19 and other endemic infections could be particularly burdensome to tropical countries. 5,6 In the present scenario, strict adherence to social distancing (maintaining a physical distance of at least 2 meters), wearing a face mask, and regular handwashing are essential practices that are highly recommended for preventing human-to-human transmission of SARS-CoV-2. 7,8 Social distancing plays a critical role in slowing the rapid transmission of SARS-CoV-2 within the community.…”

“…3,4 In addition, coinfection of SARS-CoV-2 and endemic infections in Asia is a major concern. 5,6 As of June 30, 2021, 259,301 people in Thailand had been infected with COVID-19, and there were 2,023 deaths. 7 The most vulnerable group in the infected population was older people.…”
