SARS-CoV-2 IgG seroprevalence in blood donors located in three different federal states, Germany, March to June 2020

Abstract: Most cases of coronavirus disease 2019 are mild or asymptomatic. Therefore, many cases remain unrecorded. We determined seroprevalence of IgG antibodies against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in 3,186 regular blood donors in three German federal states between 9 March and 3 June 2020. The IgG seroprevalence was 0.91% (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.58-1.24) overall, ranging from 0.66% (95%

“…In other places where community transmission has been documented, they were accompanied by staggering morbidity and mortality rates; this however was not the case in the African continent. 25 The youthfulness of the African population, which has been identified as one of the protective factors against the disease severity, also comes to bear in this study because more than half of participants who were seropositive were between the age of 31-40 years. A review of the distribution of seropositivity within different cadres of healthcare workers suggested that the professionals who have more contact or spend more time with patients are more likely to be seropositive; this pattern has previously been described.…”

“…Germany [87] This study assessed residue sera from 3186 regular blood donors collected during March 9-June 3 and obtained 29 positive results (raw prevalence 0•9%). The authors stated: "It should be emphasized that the preselection of blood donors as a study cohort is accompanied by limitations regarding representation of population.…”

“…Similarly, in two independent seroprevalence studies performed in Barcelona province, also a nearly twofold higher risk was described for HCWs, ranging between 9.3% 12 and 10.3% 13 compared with 7% in the general province population 11 . Also in Germany, a population-based seroprevalence study denoted a 0.94% of IgG seroprevalence in the North Rhine-Westphalia region 23 , while a 1.6% was reported among healthcare workers of the University Hospital Essen located in the same region 18 .…”
