SARS-CoV-2 RNA shedding in recovered COVID-19 cases and the presence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in recovered COVID-19 cases and close contacts

Abstract: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). COVID-19 emerged in December 2019 and has spread globally. Although Thailand has been effective at controlling the spread of COVID-19, disease surveillance and information on antibody responses in infected cases and close contacts are needed because there is still no specific treatment or vaccine available. We investigated 217 recovered COVID-19 cases to monitor their viral RNA shedding and production… Show more

“…Although the scientific community is aware of the general immune response after any viral infection, the information about immune response during and after covid19 infection is still largely evolving. 10 Multiple sero-surveillance studies which have focused on antibodies against SARS-CoV2 among various categories have been found to be extremely useful in understanding the progress of the pandemic. Scientific studies have recommended continued surveillance through seroprevalence studies to estimate and monitor the growing burden of Covid-19.…”

“…As of 15 December 2020, more than 73 million people have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 and over 1.6 million deaths have been reported worldwide (Worldometer, 2021). Viral RNA can remain detectable for more than 100 days in 6.6% of patients after clinical recovery from initial infection; 5% their close contacts develop IgG antibodies, suggesting past exposure (Chirathaworn et al, 2020). Asymptomatic people are also well-documented transmitters of infection.…”

“…Although the scientific community is aware of the general immune response after any viral infection, and has some insight into the seropositivity for Covid19, there is very little information about the immune response among Contacts of Covid19 cases. 14,15 The present study on the seropositivity among contacts is among the few serological studies from India, exclusively covering the contacts of Covid19 cases with a large sample of contacts.…”
