SARS-CoV Antibody Prevalence in All Hong Kong Patient Contacts

Abstract: A total of 1,068 asymptomatic close contacts of patients with severe acute respiratory (SARS) from the 2003 epidemic in Hong Kong were serologically tested, and 2 (0.19%) were positive for SARS coronavirus immunoglobulin G antibody. SARS rarely manifests as a subclinical infection, and at present, wild animal species are the only important natural reservoirs of the virus.

“…In a study on SARS-coronavirus seroprevalence in close contacts of all SARS patients in Hong Kong, only 2 (0.19%) were seropositive, and one of them was a 4-year-old boy who lived with his parents and grandfather, who all had SARS. 15 In fact, when restricted to close contacts of SARS cases from AMOY, the seroprevalence in that study was 1 of 161 (0.62%), which was virtually identical to our present estimate (P ϭ .99). Although symptoms of SARS in children were more nonspecific, a majority of patients could be reliably identified by vigilant frontline health care professionals according to stringent diagnostic criteria for case definition.…”

“…However, only 260 cases had sufficient DNA left over for further analysis. The third control group of 309 HHC subjects was recontacted from the study of Leung et al [2]. These consisted of asymptomatic close contact of patients with SARS who were serologically negative for SARS.…”

“…A proportion of persons exposed to the virus without adequate protection, however, did not develop the disease [2]. It has been reported that of the close contacts of all 1755 patients with SARS diagnosed and treated in Hong Kong, only 14% actually died of the disease; the reason for this has yet to be discovered.…”

“…Quarantine involves the segregation of healthy contacts and it was the policy for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in many countries. Such a drastic measure for SARS was carried out for the sake of caution, but the present evidence does not support the need for quarantine because subclinical infection is shown to be almost nonexistent [16] and even mildly symptomatic cases have not been reported [17].…”
