Sartorius Muscle Contracture in a German Shepherd Dog

Abstract: Sartorius muscle contracture can be treated by tenectomy or removal of contracted muscle tissue, however, long-term outcome suggests the need to develop approaches that prevent recurrence caused by scarring of transected tissues.

“…The localized or circumscript form is characterized by heterotopic, non-neo-plastic bone formation in one muscle or a group of muscles due to metaplastic evolution of a fibrotic contracture or myopathy (1,2). The condition, described mainly in horses and dogs, generally affects the caudal muscles of the thighs especially the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, semimembranosus, gracilis, sartorius and gluteal muscles, typically in the region of coxofemoral joint (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10). The aetiopathogenesis is uncertain.…”

“…Common abnormalities observed in dogs include infraspinatus 7–15 and quadriceps muscle contracture 8,14,16,17 . Fibrotic myopathy of the supraspinatus, 8,14 teres minor, 18 sartorius, 19,20 gracilis, and semitendinosus muscles 8,14,21,22 has been reported but the cause(s) remain(s) elusive. Traumatically induced iliopsoas strain in dogs 5,23–25 can be unilateral or bilateral, causing lameness and pain during internal rotation and extension of the hip that usually responds to rest and nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drug therapy.…”

“…Surgical resection or release of contracted supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and iliopsoas muscle tendons are reported to carry good prognoses (6-8, 10, 14). On the other hand, resection or release of contracted gracilis, semitendinosus and sartorius muscle tendons tends to have a more guarded prognosis with a high rate of recurrence reported due to the formation of bridging fibrous tissue up to 12 months post-surgery (9,11,12). The cause of the disparities in response to surgery is unknown.…”

“…The cause of the disparities in response to surgery is unknown. However, differing aetiopathogeneses, incomplete surgical resection, and the anatomical location have been suggested to predispose to recurrence (4,9,11).…”
