Satellite analysis of the environmental impacts of armed-conflict in Rakhine, Myanmar

Abstract: The impacts of armed con ict on the environment are extremely complex and di cult to investigate, given the impossibility of accessing the affected area and reliable data limitation. Very-high-resolution satellite imageries and highly reliable machine learning algorithms become very useful in studying direct and indirect impacts of war on the ecosystem, in addition to connected effects on human lives. The Rohingya con ict is described as one of the worst humanitarian crises and human-made disasters of the 21st… Show more

“…These areas are vulnerable to climatic shocks, internal and border conflicts, including large-scale land-grabbing (Barbesgaard 2019). The western coast is prone to cyclone and storm surge flooding (Soe, Thant and Htun 2018) but also the scene of major ethnic conflict targeting the Rohingya population, with ensuing large-scale displacement and a major refugee crisis (Aung 2021). Tanintharyi, a thin strip of land only and one of the least populated regions in the country, holds nearly one third of private agricultural concessions in the country, particularly for oil palm and rubber (Woods, 2015).…”

“…Fire remains a key military strategy. This is sometimes clear and direct, such as in the oil fires in Kuwait (Limaye et al, 1991), or scorched earth in Myanmar (Aung, 2021). At other times it is more complexly intertwined with climate, land use, and geopolitics, such as forest fires in Eastern Turkey (Dinc et al, 2021) or Iraqi Kurdistan (Eklund et al, 2021).…”

“…Also, there is wide academic and political consensus that particularly armed conflicts have a tremendous negative effect on the environment (overview in Baumann & Kuemmerle, 2016). The cases of Ukraine (Flamm & Kroll, 2024) and Afghanistan are the latest in a series of well-documented cases such as Myanmar (Aung, 2021) or Colombia (Baptiste et al, 2017; Clerici et al, 2020; Sierra et al 2017) exposing the ties between environmental change and social conflict. To respond better to these challenges and the needs of peace and development practitioners (Adger et al, 2001), environmental peacebuilding (EP) emerged as a framework that integrates perspectives coming from international relations, economics, environmental studies, and geography, among others (Ide, 2020).…”
